Nouveau Novelity: Costumery

Have you heard about Sonoma County’s latest event weaving world culture, local artists, and fashion for a fun collaboration of “nouveau novelties”?  Santa Rosa has the Handcar Regatta. Petaluma has Rivertown Revival. Now a vintage French market is coming to Healdsburg through the 4-a-child Benefit Auction!

The California Parenting Institute hosts this fun, arty affair as a fundraiser to support bringing hope to local families through the 4-a-child campaign.  Put Saturday, September 18, 2010, 4:30-7:00 PM on your calendars for a late afternoon to remember at Rodney Strong Vineyards  {11455 Old Redwood Hwy., Healdsburg} and buy your $50 ticket today!

Costumery

I am looking forward to the potential costumery of this affair. An excuse to wear a beret? Pull on my striped stockings (just purchased from Aubergine’s)? See people in corsets or crinoline skirts?

Half the fun of attending local events featuring nouveau novelties surrounds “people watching.” The outfits at Handcar and Rivertown Revival prove our community has got spunk, style, and sassiness down to an art form!

Chris Aluia

Chris Aluia of Lions and Tigers and Hair (a fabulous children’s hair salon in Petaluma) shows off her spirit in her several layers of skirts at the Rivertown Revival this past July. Dressing to fit a Tom Sawyer meets Coney Island theme, Chris sports red, white and black colors, and nautical-esque stripes.

Let’s break down the “noveau” or new-old compilation with the novel twist. The vintage elements? Those crinoline skirts, the derby cap, and the high boots. Don’t forget the gauntlet gloves! The new elements? Styling event t-shirt (designed by the talented Tyler Young of Young Nomad Brand) with hand cut neck-line, and yarn tied cap sleeves.

Want a piece of Chris’s style? While she is not selling costumery, your child can experience her talents in her hair salon! Check out the 4-a-Child Benefit and Auction opportunities to win a child’s cut or call Chris for an appointment today!

Sharon Eisley

sharon in corset back of corset

Sharon Eisley, fine artist, local mom, and author of the blog “When in Home“, struts her stuff in a hand painted corset.  This corset – and many others created by artists across the United States – will be featured in an upcoming lovely, photo-centric, coffee table book featuring this timeless French couture redone by fine artists.

The vintage element?  Her silk skirt with ruffled bottom and silky corset.  The new twist?  The corset worn as a top – rather than an undergarment.  And of course the intricate hand painted birds on thorny branches.  Very “noir”!

Sharon may don this outfit again as her official costume for the 4-a-Child Benefit and Auction, or she may wear it while she welcomes art viewers at her Steampunk-esque art display at  Dare Devils and Queens during the Handcar Regatta on September 26, 2010.   Catch her unusual “animeople” oil and wood cut creations at Daredevils and Queens {4th st. Santa Rosa in Railroad Square} September 9th-October 15th.  AND check out the 4-a-Child Benefit and Auction where you just may find one of Sharon’s paintings on the auction tables!

Charissa Lynn Drengsen

Local “upcycled threads” designer and seamstress has a few “nouveau novel” design ideas for sale.  I first spotted her lovely creations in her Rivertown Revival vendor stall, and was enthralled with what Charissa describes her designs as “post-modern, eco-friendly, vintage inspired, steampunk adjacent, repurposed & recycled, handcrafted creations.”

Have you ever seen a men’s dress shirt turned into a corsety top?  What about vintage pilot goggles used as an accessory?  Would you have conjured up a French style women’s cap with a feminine, yet bold flower?  The shrug is certainly a throw back with modern purchase.   Old is made new as the nouveau novel fashion comes to life in the hands of Charissa Drengsen!

Prepare for your evening out at the 4-a-Child Benefit and Auction and order your costume and accessories today.  Charissa offers an etsy shop called “Upcycled Threads“  as well as other designs available through her website “curly-cue design.”  You can also catch Charissa and Curly Cue Designs at the Handcar Regatta on September 26, 2010.

Can’t wait to see how you mix these elements to come up with your own costumes or accessories to wear to the 4-a-Child Benefit and Auction! Buy your ticket today and get working on what you’ll strut as you stroll through their vintage French market!

Special Give Away

Need a break to help you justify that costume purchase?  California Parenting Institute is offering Sono-Ma readers the exclusive opportunity to win 2 pairs of tickets!  The tickets will be awarded to two people who leave comments on this post. Earn an extra entry by liking 4-a-Child Benefit and Auction on Facebook here.  Contest ends on September 15, 2010 at midnight.  This $200 gift strengthens local Sonoma County families who’ve struggled with abuse.  Thank you for doing your part to spread the word!

“Super-Local” Beef for a Super Deal this Labor Day Weekend at Whole Foods

grass-fed beefIn May, Whole Foods Market announced that all of its U.S. stores were offering grass-fed-and-finished beef.  In Marin, Napa, and Sonoma, we’ll be able to purchase what Whole Foods deems the highest quality, locally-sourced organic, grass-fed and grass-finished beef available.   Supplied by Panorama Meats, North Bay shoppers can now pick up beef that is “super local” and raised  in our tri-county area.

In their press release, Whole Foods included a call for local writers to sample the meat    To my surprise and delight, I was selected to take home a bit of beef for tasting and feedback purposes.  This Sunday, Bryles and I started off our weekly shopping trip with a stop at the Whole Foods Customer Service desk, and walked away with a 1.5 pound sample of the Panorama Filet Mignon!

My jaw dropped when I saw the choice cut.  It is  NORMALLY PRICED AT MORE THAN $38.00 for this 1.5 pound piece!!  I stumbled over to the butcher in a dream, and asked how to properly prepare a fine Filet Mignon.

He came around from behind the meat case and spent about 5 minutes coaching me in pan searing and oven finishing a loin – just the kind of great customer service I’ve come to expect from the Whole Foods Market staffers!

When I got home, I phoned my dear friends the Leras Family, and asked them if they wanted to share our treat.  We soon found ourselves in their lovely outdoor kitchen frying the steak and preparing side dishes straight out of the garden.  The kids happily played on the trampoline (note the go cart and hula hoops that made this even more fun for our creative boys!).  We adults savored stove top smells and lively conversation in anticipation of our meal.

The resulting feast was magnificent!  The Panorama meat was truly tender, tasty, and moist, which is not something we can always say about the grass-fed beef that crosses our family table.

We would have devoured every last bite, but somehow we all got distracted by farm events (e.g. the 6:00 milking time and evening egg collecting from the secret chicken “nest-es” as the boys call them). We left a few final bites on the plate unattended – a dreadful mistake for us, but a wonderful gift for the farm cat who stole the last slice of Filet Mignon off the plate!

Now, a value-priced ground grass-fed beef $3.99/lb. special is available at all U.S. Whole Foods Market stores on Friday, September 3, just in time for Labor Day weekend grilling.

Preparing grass-fed beef differs from grain-fed beef.  Find out what makes grass-fed beef unique and how to grill a great grass-fed beef burger with Chef Kevin Gillespie:

Cooking tips include:

  1. Don’t cook grass-fed beef cold; it is best when removed from the refrigerator 15 minutes or so prior to cooking.
  2. When cooking on the grill, let the flames burn down more than is recommended for other meat. Also, it doesn’t need as much cooking time.
  3. When cooking in the oven, lower the oven’s cooking temperature by about 25°F and the cooking time will stay about the same.
  4. Always use tongs, never a fork, to turn your beef; don’t press or flatten during cooking in order to retain precious juices.

Find two terrific burger recipes here:

  1. Bahn Mi Grass-Fed Beef Burgers
  2. Apple and Cheddar Grass-fed Beef Burgers

Hit the Whole Foods Market in your neighborhood today for great ground beef for your weekend grilling fun!

Whole Foods Market North Bay stores include:

Mill Valley/Blithedale

San Rafael

Novato

Petaluma

Santa Rosa/Yulupa

Worth WeeCycling: Local Sisters Help Families Consign for Cash and Clothes & More

Have you ever wished that you could create a genius home business plan where you could make enough money to stay home and support family life?  Santa Rosa moms Kristin Holden and Juli Buccellato share your sentiments.  These two “mom-prenuers” just launched “Worth WeeCycling” – a fantastic operation that just may help them pay the bills while spending more time at home.

But did these two moms stop there with their vision?  No!  Kristin and Juli designed Worth WeeCycling to help give other local families a way to earn and save money, give support to local Sonoma County community groups, and partner with other established Mom-owned businesses.  Worth WeeCycling is truly worth checking out!

The Business Plan

Kristin and Juli’s plan is brilliantly simple:  help local families clean out their closets to earn cash and provide a one-stop shop for families looking for children and maternity bargains.

Local moms are thrilled to get involved.  Alison Butler of Napa – who is mother to Dexter (4) and Ashley (3) -  captures the growing excitement with this quote:

I chose Worth WeeCycling because they are very professional, provide opportunities to volunteer to earn more back from sales, provide security for my items, provide all the items I need for the sale, they offer great customer service, are a local company owned by Moms who also care about local charities and are active in our community.”

Bringing Other Moms Up With Them

While Kristin and Juli take a small percent of the consignment sales, its local families who take home the big dollars and the big savings!

Consign:  Consignors earn up to 75% CASH.   Worth WeeCycling offers FREE Registration, provides all of the supplies necessary to consign (including hangers and an on-line tagging service).  They also only charge a $10 consignor fee at the end of the sale if you make a profit (no risk – you don’t pay a dime unless you make money).   Consignors also receive passes for the presale on September 10th in Santa Rosa and October 1st in Napa – shop before the public.

No time to tag, use their  Concierge Tagging Service.  Just drop off your items to Worth WeeCycling and they’ll price and tag them.  Then, after the sale, you’ll get a check for a minimum of 40% of the sales price of your items.

Volunteer: Worth WeeCycling offers many ways in which you can volunteer and earn an extra 10%.  Not only will you earn an extra 10%, you will also receive earliest entry into the presale on the evening of September 10th in Santa Rosa and Friday, October 1st in Napa.

(current items dropped off for “concierge” tagging for upcoming events)

Candace Hermsmeyer of Santa Rosa who is mom to Jackson (4) and Charli (1) shares her insights:

I chose to consign with Worth WeeCycling because I know that I can get a return on my investment in the quality childrens’ clothing that my kids have grown out of. I feel that people tend to buy and sell the more quality brand names at these events, so the price point is above what I can make simply selling them via Craigslist or a garage sale. I have also tried ebay, but it doesn’t pencil out when you factor in shipping costs.

By consigning, I know that the clothing and other baby items I attempt to sell are not going to end up in the trash… or worse, eaten by moths! I also like that if the items aren’t sold they are donated, so it’s a win-win.

Giving Back to Sonoma County

Volunteering. Kristin and Juli give both time and money back to the community. These ladies recently volunteered at the Gravenstein Apple Fair, helping families enjoy local, organic apples.  You can also see these generous gals in action as  volunteers at the upcoming Sono-Ma Support Tent for the Handcar Regatta.

Charity.   Unsold items not picked up at the end of the sale will be donated to local charities, including Pregnancy Counseling Center (PCC), The Living Room, and others.  In addition to donating unsold items, Worth WeeCycling will donate a percentage of profit back in cash.

Worth WeeCycling‘s September event will also host a special fundraiser for the family of a 4-year old Santa Rosa boy fighting cancer.  Local families are encouraged to donate items to consign on behalf of the Wagner family.  Proceeds will help cover medical expenses not paid by insurance.

In a heart tugging glimpse into what the Wagner Family struggles with, Mrs. Wagner shares, “His biggest challenges come about 10 days after treatment, when his blood counts are low, which has an effect on his energy levels and his ability to socialize. During this time, he is not able to go to physical therapy either, which sets him back a bit in the area of strength and coordination. He also has to get blood and platelet transfusions during recovery time because his  blood counts get too low to allow them to build back up on their own. When he needs a transfusion, we have to drive to San Francisco to an outpatient clinic and stay between 3-6 hours depending on the type of transfusion, then drive home. We had to do this four times during this recent recovery period, so it was quite taxing on the whole family.”

Partnering with other Mom Businesses & Mom Supported Organizations

Worth WeeCycling values community partnerships and is engaging family owned businesses as well as mom supported organizations.

In one stellar case, Worth WeeCycling partners with Lorna at My Gym to capitalize on a popular family destination as a perfect Drop Off Location for consignment items for the deserving Wagner family.

Lorna says,
“Have some fun while you donate!   Families may bring donations into My Gym Children’s Fitness Center and play for free at any scheduled Open Playtime. No reservations needed. Please note that parents are required to wear socks and activity is parent supervised.  Come by
  • Tuesday 8/31 4:45-5:45
  • Wednesday 9/1, 9/8 11:40-12:40
  • Thursday 9/2, 9/9 2:25-3:25
  • Friday 9/3   12:50-1:50

Local mom owned businesses will also have vendor stalls at the Worth WeeCycling Events.  Connie of Ami sol and Alison of Scentsy offer your family  fabulous products from protective sun wear to flameless candles.

Kristin and Juli also encourage parent supported organizations (e.g. Soccer Teams, Parent Teacher Organizations, etc.) to take advantage of their consignment events.

Our events can be used as fundraisers for schools, mom’s clubs, sports teams, church groups, etc.  Register your organization as a consignor and earn a minimum of 65% (plus an extra 10% if a few people from the organization volunteer), plus we will waive the $10 consignor fee.  We will provide you with all necessary supplies to consign your items.  No more asking people to buy over priced items or give monetary donations.

Suds in the Bucket and Laundry Hanging Out on the Line

Several days this week, I’ve found the sun shining.  My spirits are so high,  I am singing.  How wonderful to finally  hang my laundry with hopes that it will dry in under a day…

Here’s the song I’m belting out while snapping sheets!

Want your own laundry line?  Check out the Household Essentials 15-7 Five-Line Indoor/Outdoor Retractable Clothes Dryer ($44).  You may also need a post to attach the line at the opposite end from your house wall.  Try the Household Essentials 42-0 Trree-Piece Clothes-Drying Post for Whitney 15-7 Retractable Dryer ($28).   Using a laundry line means less electricity, less pollution, less money, and more time in the fresh open air for all!

Your kids will also love to play “peek-a-boo” from behind tablecloths …

Thanks to Selena Cate of Apron Thrift Girl who read my story, “Barter, Trade, and Share – Save Money and Strengthen Our Community” and generously gifted me a retractable laundry.  Selena says she’ll hit me up for a future trade, and that finding treasures is easy for her.  Try her “finder service” to ensure you bring home that item you’ve been unable to score on your own.

Now, I’ve got to get to work on landing a trade or thrifting score to get Bryles his own washing board and bucket like the he one we love from Gail’s Smiling Tree Farm…  Wish me luck!

Grab your parasol and stroll through a vintage french market while bringing hope 4-a-child

4-a-child

The California Parenting Institute hosts this fun, arty affair as a fundraiser to support bringing hope to local families through the 4-a-child campaign.  Put Saturday, September 18, 2010, 4:30-7:00 PM on your calendars for a late afternoon to remember at Rodney Strong Vineyards  {11455 Old Redwood Hwy., Healdsburg}.

Me?   I am buying tickets to this event, because the affordable $50 ticket price gives me carte blanche (to use a French term!) to enjoy my fill of Harvey’s Gourmet Mini Donuts in a traditional paper cone. (Yes. I will throw my usual diet of sprouted grains out the window for a night.)

I will also wander over to Redwood Hill Farm’s market stand for some french style goat cheeses.  Then I will linger in front of Dominique’s Sweets.  Dominique studied at the famous le Cordon Bleu Culinary Arts Academy in France where Julia Child got her start, and I can’t wait to sample a bit of what she learned there!

French Macaroons

AND of course I feel great about my charitable contribution going towards a fabulous local prevention program.  The 4-a-child campaign focuses on strengthening families and helping kids to have abuse free childhoods – a cause I proudly select to champion even with my cash-strapped budget.

Nouveau Novelties

The 4-a-Child Benefit Auction features many “nouveau novelties” – what I like to define as a developing local fashion of combing the new and vintage in novel ways.  From creative costumes, to French music that is described as “gypsy funk”, to foods that combine traditional and new age elements, to unusual auction items, nouveau novelties abound!

Stay tuned to Sono-Ma for upcoming articles exploring how local artists, musicians, and chefs will exhibit these fashions at the 4-a-Child Benefit Auction.  Want a sneak preview of the upcoming article on nouveau novel costumery?  Enjoy this picture:

Chris Aluia of Lions and Tigers and Hair (a fabulous children’s hair salon in Petaluma) shows off her nouveau novel costume at the Rivertown Revival this past July.
